Day 69 - Exploring the Amazon

This was a full day at our Amazon Eco-Lodge, but we started at 4am ready to explore a nearby oxbow lake (or billabong).

We were up before 4 so as to avoid the heat of midday, and travelled upstream for a while in the boat then walked for half an hour to the oxbow lake where another catamaran punt was set to take us quietly around the lake, driven by a local boy with an oar at the back. He worked hard.

The guide, Luis, was very enthusiastic about the plants and birds and chattered on non-stop which became a little wearing after a while, despite his obvious knowledge. He showed us local spices growing including celantro which had an excellent taste and smell. At the lake we saw dozens of birds that I had not ever heard of, plus wild otters hunting for fish. These were quite special, as they hunt in family packs quite efficiently.

A highlight for me was seeing a really large hairy tarantula, about the size of my hand.  Sheryle also saw a large green snake near our room. Definitely room for excitement.
