Day 67 - Exploring Cusco

We slept soundly after trying to find our way around Cusco using my phone and Google Maps which initially were no help until they had updated to Cusco geography!

We looked at a few places for alpaca clothing for ourselves and children and purchased a few things including a sweater for me, that is gorgeous. Designs and colours are not "mainstream Australia" so some very intersting stuff can be seen.

At first we had intended to walk to a specific Alpaca store and also consider the Vicuna clothing, which is very fine, but in the thousands of dollars each item! However the army was doing their Sunday parade in the square, which happens on every Sunday apparently. there were about 500 men and women, all armed with belts of ammunition and RPG's. It was quite a show, but we were not allowed through their ranks of course and had to walk around and up a steep hill.

After lunch our guide, Reuben took us the Temple of the sun, moon and stars, where the Spanish had built churches on every significant Inca Palace or celebratory place, only to find them fall down when the major earthquakes occur, the last in 1950. We discussed how they made the blocks and what the small holes and lumps were on each one (to lever them into place and to tie them, or coverings to the stones).
